The End of Our One Year: 26 Canton Adventure and a New Future for Hidden Switzerland Travel

December 12th 2024

As of a few weeks ago, our yearlong endeavor to visit all 26 of Switzerland’s Cantons in 2024 is officially complete!

From the start, the project was a bit of a roller coaster. In January we were questioning whether it was even feasible given our work and personal commitments, let alone a good idea. A few months later, we had smashed out about a dozen Cantons and the goal didn’t seem too far off.

Then came the summer doldrums (at least in terms of visiting Cantons). Hiking, running, conferences, and weddings sidelined us, and the uncertainty began to creep back in. Would we really be able to visit all 26 Cantons in a single year?

Determined not to come so far without giving it our best effort, we started taking our hiking trips to other Cantons, making long day trips clear across the country, and booked our Fall holiday with the sole intention of crossing off Cantons.

And it paid off! The past few weeks were our last push to the finish. We took the train through Domodossola into Ticino and spent several days exploring the Castles at Bellinzona and shores of Lakes Lugano and Locarno. From there it was on to Nidwalden and an exceptional day exploring its capital city of Stans before crossing Vierwaldstatersee into the Canton of Schwyz.

Nidwalden marked our penultimate Canton so, when we finally touched down in Switzerland’s namesake Canton of Schwyz the next day, we had done it. The journey that started nearly 10 months prior in Geneva (I suppose Bern if we are being technical about it) was finally complete. One Year: 26 Cantons.

As of this week we have a post for every Canton so I guess the question becomes, what comes next for Hidden Switzerland Travel?

In the short term we will press pause on the blog to recover through the holidays.

For me, the last year has been fun, exciting, and packed. Writing on the blog every week has been a great way to pass time on the train and it’s always fun to hear when people have found the posts interesting or helpful. That being said, researching, writing, editing, and formatting for upwards of 10 to 15 hours per week is a big commitment in addition to my day job and actually visiting all the places we share on the blog.

In the new year we will introduce a couple of exciting new series (more on those soon) but we will also be making a couple changes. The biggest of those is a new, and hopefully more sustainable, bi-weekly posting schedule that lets us continue to share Switzerland while I take a deep dive and finally try to become fluent in German.

Thank you for joining us on this journey and for all of your support of Hidden Switzerland Travel. Wishing you all the best for a happy holidays!
